IPL Photofacial

Sun damage, discolouration, and vascular lesions, such as rosacea or birthmarks, can be tough to treat. IPL photofacial treatments at our Toronto-area dermatology practice are often recommended for patients troubled by irregular colouration such as age spots or sun spots. More effective than creams and serums but gentler than a laser, IPL is a comfortable, conservative treatment option that can yield younger-looking, even skin.

Request a consultation online or call Bertucci MedSpa at (905) 850-4415 to find out more about what IPL can do for you. Bertucci MedSpa is located in Woodbridge, Ontario and serves men and women from Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Aurora, Thornhill, Mississauga, Barrie, and all of greater Toronto.

How Does It Work?

The treatment directs a variety of light wavelengths over a broad swath of skin for a consistent improvement that reduces discolouration. The light absorbed by the skin, causing hyperpigmented areas, such as sun spots and some birthmarks, to break apart and disperse for a lighter, more consistent complexion. In addition to its effect on pigment, IPL encourages the rapid regeneration of skin cells, encouraging production of collagen, elastin, and other important proteins.

Is IPL Right for Me?

IPL photofacial is a versatile treatment that can benefit most patients who are frustrated with uneven pigmentation, including irregularities caused by:

  • Aging: The aging process can contribute to a number of skin concerns. Years of sun exposure can leave the skin with dark spots and blotchiness, and a loss of collagen can make skin saggy and less resilient. IPL can help aging skin by fading spots and promoting collagen development, encouraging skin to look and behave like its younger self. For aging skin, IPL can be complemented by a wrinkle-smoothing injectable or soft tissue fillers.
  • Vascular lesions: Birthmarks, spider veins, and red lesions can be effectively treated by IPL. Some prominent veins may require other laser vein treatments, such as the VBeam, for better results.
  • Rosacea: Although this chronic condition, characterized by broken blood vessels and redness, can't be cured, it can be significantly improved with IPL or laser treatments. The treatment can also reduce the incidence and severity of flushing attacks associated with the condition.

IPL is not an effective treatment for raised lesions, including moles. For these patients, Dr. Bertucci often recommends mole and spot removal.

What Can I Expect?

IPL is performed by a qualified member of our medical staff within our state-of-the-art dermatology practice. She first cleanses your skin and provides you with protective eyewear. Your practitioner then applies a cooling, conductive gel to your skin. She uses a small handpiece to direct the intense pulses of light to your skin in short, quick bursts. The treatment can feel like a mild sting or snap of a rubber band, but most patients do not find it painful. Most appointments last between 30 minutes and 1 hour.

Unlike a laser, IPL doesn't penetrate deeply into the skin, making it a comfortable procedure that should not require recuperation time.

Following your session, you can return to your routine activities immediately. You may experience residual discomfort, and redness can persist for several days. Typically, dark spots treated by IPL will turn darker over the course of the first week, then disappear or fade significantly. Most patients benefit from a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart. During your consultation, we will help you understand the treatment schedule that's likely to give you your ideal results.
