What Is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a resurfacing treatment that uses exfoliating acids to smooth and refine damaged outer layers of the skin, restoring some of its natural beauty. Our practice offers 3 levels of exfoliation – light, medium, and deep – with various acidic formulations that can be customized to your specific concerns.

Which Chemical Peel Is Right for Me?

Depending on the level of exfoliation and the type of acid used, a chemical peel can produce mild, moderate, or dramatic results. We will recommend the appropriate treatment based on your skin type, the nature of the issue, and aesthetic preferences. We may also discuss other exfoliating treatments, such as microdermabrasion or Fraxel® laser skin resurfacing.

Some of the chemical peels offered by Bertucci MedSpa include glycolic and trichloroacetic acid (TCA). Glycolic is typically used for light to medium peeling, while TCA is intended for medium or deeper procedures. Your medical aesthetician will determine which type of treatment will be most effective for your specific needs.

Glycolic Peel

Glycolic acid is a form of alpha-hydroxy acid that penetrates the skin to break up the bonds between dead skin cells, enhance cellular turnover, and restore elasticity and firmness.

Dr. Schrammek Green Peel®

This herbal peeling solution contains enzymes, vitamins, and minerals that increase blood circulation to treat large pores, excess oils, sun damage, scarring, and more.

TCA Peel

TCA dissolves the top layer of skin cells and stimulates the production of healthy new cells. It treats signs of aging, including wrinkles, discoloration, scarring, and more.

Carbon Peel

A carbon lotion combines with dirt, oil, and other debris on your skin’s surface. A laser then heats and evaporates the carbon, taking facial impurities away with it and stimulating new collagen production.

What Can I Expect During a Chemical Peel Treatment?

Your medical aesthetician will thoroughly cleanse the skin before applying the chemical solution. Depending on the strength of the peel, the solution may remain on the skin between 1 to 5 minutes or longer. Some patients using topical acne medications may be asked to stop 3 to 5 days before their chemical peel.

What Is Recovery Like After a Chemical Peel?

In the days after your peel, you may experience some redness, flaking, and dryness. You may also notice an increase in skin sensitivity, which should subside within a few days. Sun exposure should be avoided, and sunblock should be applied regularly after treatment. Deeper peels often result in more redness and some scabbing.

As your skin heals, you will be able to enjoy brighter, fresher skin with enhanced radiance and clarity. Visible signs of acne, sun damage, and skin discoloration should begin to gradually fade as new, healthy skin is revealed. Because results are cumulative, we usually recommend a series of 4 to 6 glycolic acid peels every 4 weeks for optimal results. For stronger peels, a single treatment may be able to produce the desired results. Individual results can vary based on the existing condition of your skin and what you are looking to achieve.
