How Does It Work?
The VBeam is a pulsed dye laser, meaning that the energy is delivered in bursts (pulses), and dye is used to create different colours (wavelengths) of laser light. Vascular lasers utilize short pulses of focused yellow light which is absorbed by hemoglobin – the red protein in vascular lesions such as spider veins, broken capillaries, rosacea, and certain birthmarks such as port wine stains. The laser energy breaks down the hemoglobin, reducing or eliminating the discolouration. The surrounding tissues do not absorb this energy, so they remain unharmed.
Is VBeam Right for Me?
VBeam is the laser of choice for correcting:
- Facial & spider veins
- Small leg veins
- Rosacea
- Stretch marks
- Vascular lesions
- Certain acne scars
It can also be used to remove stubborn warts and some pigmented lesions. Dr. Bertucci will discuss your options for laser and energy treatments, which may include IPL and Fraxel®.
If you have a history of cold sores, you may be prescribed a course of anti-viral medication prior to your treatment as the laser may cause an outbreak.

Before treatment, the area will be cleansed and prepped with a topical anesthetic. You will be given protective eyewear for optimal safety during your treatment. As the handpiece is guided over your skin, short pulses of laser energy are delivered at quick intervals, while a stream of cool air is simultaneously directed at the treatment area. Discomfort is typically described as comparable to a rubber band snapping against the skin.
A treatment session typically lasts between 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area to be treated. You may have some swelling, redness, and discomfort after treatment, but these should resolve within a few days. Using cool compresses on the area will help these to resolve more quickly. Bruising is rare. Most patients find that they can return to work or routine activities after treatment. Depending on the condition being treated, you may need a series of treatments to achieve the desired outcome.
